Phenomenal Feature: Kasturi J.

She once scared her best friend with a bunch of dead cockroaches in the middle of a crowded local train that was hurtling down the tracks in the heart of Mumbai.
Growing up, Kasturi learnt about love and loss early on. She often found herself stinging from the hurt of friendships that took more than they gave, but a brief meltdown later she would be back to who she truly was, a friend in love with the idea of friendship.

Hers is a soul like that of a storm cloud, constantly at war with what she feels and what she ought to feel. She is many things – daughter, sister, wife and mother but above all she is Kasturi – fiercely independent (ask her husband), crazy friend (ask her hapless victims), responsible mother (she is not the “I live for my son” type – she loves her son, but she would rather they each live for themselves) and honest daughter (ask her parents, she doesn’t hide behind the sanskaari beti tag).
From a corporate career in India to working with a retail giant in the US, Kasturi still finds the need to find herself every now and then. Writing is one of the ways she does this.
So we asked her to share something that touched her in some way, this is what she sent.

Slow dance
“Have you ever watched kids on a merry-go-round?
Or listened to the rain slapping on the ground?
Ever followed a butterfly’s erratic flight?
Or gazed at the sun into the fading night?
You better slow down.
Don’t dance so fast.
Time is short.
The music won’t last.
Do you run through each day on the fly?
When you ask, “how are you?”
Do you hear the reply?
When the day is done, do you lie in your bed,
With the next hundred chores running through your head?
You’d better slow down
Don’t dance so fast.
Time is short
The music won’t last.
Ever told your child,
We’ll do it tomorrow?
And in your haste,
Not see his sorrow?
Ever lost touch, let a good friendship die
Cause you never had time
To call and say,’hi’
You’d better slow down.
Don’t dance so fast.
Time is short.
The music won’t last…
When you run so fast to get somewhere,
You miss half the fun of getting there.
When you worry and hurry through your day,
It is like an unopened gift…
Thrown away.
Life is not a race.
Do take it slower
Hear the music
Before the song is over.”

Whoever wrote this piece, we think its a beautiful reflection of her storm and her need to slow down.
She is a phenomenal woman.
